Tobruk Battlefield Tour
"In Search of Rommel"




This is not a just the exploration of a battlefield but also of a legend. See where the Desert Fox really was, and not where history books place him. Often described as the “Last Knight of Europe” it was, however, in the sands of North Africa that Rommel really made a name for himself. A highly successful tour which has included Historians and Authors. Sites to be visited include Prittwitz’s bridge, the “White House” the famous German field hospital, Fig Tree hospital and map of Australia built in stone by Australian wounded, “Tobruk Bypass”, Hill 209, Bir Hakim, El Adem Road and Post R33, Sidi Rezegh and much more.A tour for Rommel and Afrika Korps enthusiasts.

Day 1 Midday flight from the UK to Tripoli, followed by early evening flight to Benghazi, where we will be met and escorted to our hotel for one night. (D)

Day 2 Drive by air conditioned coach to Tobruk via Regima Ridge, where the 2/13 th Bn A.I.F. won Australia’s first Battle Honour of WW2, and Mechili where the 3 rd Indian Motor Brigade held up the advancing Afrika Korps. On arrival at Tobruk we will check into our hotel for 4 nights (B>L>D)



Day 3 4x4 desert vehicles for - In “Search of Rommel” Part 1 covering his 1941 seige of Tobruk. Visiting the Pritwitz Bridge, El Adem Road scene of Rommels Easter attack and where Jack Edmundson won Australia’s first VC of WW2. Hill 209 where Rommel forced a salient into the Tobruk perimeter. Includes a barbecue lunch on the battlefield. (B>L>D)

  Day 4 Again we will have the use of 4x4 desert vehicles for – “In Search” of Rommel Part 2 covering the 1942 battles for Tobruk and its final capture. A picnic lunch on the battlefield. (B>L>D)

Day 5 A full day in Tobruk itself, visits to include the CWGC Cemeteries, harbour, the Rommel hotel and other not-so well known sites in Tobruk associated with the Desert Fox. (B>L>D)

Day 6 Leaving Tobruk we drive down the coast road towards Benghazi, via Gazala and the Derna Pass before reaching our hotel in Sousa, where we will stay for one night. (B>L>D) The day includes a guided tour of the ancient city of Appollonia.



 
Day 7 While continuing on to Benghazi via Barce we will conduct our “In Search of Rommel” Part 3 at Beda Littoria. Upon arrival in Benghazi we will visit Benghazi war cemetery, before taking our return flight to Tripoli. Check into our hotel for one night. (B>L>D)

 
Day 8 Return flight to the UK.
